Percussive Myogun Therapy

A type of manual therapy that involves the application of rapid and repetitive percussive or vibratory movements to the body’s soft tissues. It typically utilizes a handheld device equipped with a percussive head or attachment.

Percussive therapy devices, such as percussion massagers or handheld massage guns, deliver rapid pulses or vibrations to the targeted areas. The intensity and speed of the percussions can usually be adjusted. The goal of percussive therapy is to provide various benefits, including:

  • Muscle relaxation: The percussive vibrations can help relax tense or tight muscles, reducing muscle tension and promoting relaxation.

  • Pain relief: Percussive therapy may help alleviate muscle soreness, discomfort, and pain by stimulating the sensory nerves and disrupting pain signals.

  • Increased blood flow: The rapid pulsations of the therapy device can enhance blood circulation in the treated area, potentially aiding in tissue healing and recovery.

Physical Therapy
  • Improved range of motion: Percussive therapy can contribute to enhancing joint mobility and flexibility by targeting soft tissues, including muscles, tendons, and fascia.

  • Muscle activation and recovery: Some percussive therapy devices offer specific attachments or modes that focus on muscle activation, warming up muscles before exercise or aiding in recovery after physical activity.

It’s important to note that specific techniques or devices, including Percussive Myogun Therapy if that is a particular method, may have unique characteristics, protocols, or considerations. If you are specifically referring to “Percussive Myogun Therapy,” I recommend seeking more detailed information or consulting with a healthcare professional or therapist familiar with that specific approach to gain further insights into its application, benefits, and appropriate usage.

Whether you are an athlete or not, percussive therapy offers many benefits, including:

Your stiff neck, sore back or aching muscles may be due to fascia, layers of tissue and fluid that surround and stabilize your bones, muscles, nerves and blood vessels. Certain factors, such as repetitive movement, trauma or limited physical activity (such as sleeping), can cause the fascia to thicken and tighten up around the muscles. When that happens, you’re left with pain and limited mobility.

Percussive massage helps distribute the thickened fascia fluid to relieve the pressure and tightness you feel. Repeated pressure at high speed thins the fluids, making the fascia more pliable so that your muscle can move more easily and efficiently.

Lactic acid builds up in your muscles after exercise or other activity. This build-up often causes pain and soreness. When you use a massage gun after a workout, the percussion forces muscle fibers to release lactic acid, reducing the soreness you’ll feel.

It’s common to experience pain and soreness 24 to 72 hours after an unfamiliar physical activity such as a new exercise routine or rehabilitation after surgery or injury. The discomfort and muscular pain, called delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), results from tiny muscle fiber tears. Research shows that vibration therapy increases skin temperature, blood flow and hormonal responses to reduce inflammation and pain associated with DOMS.

Good circulation is important for your overall health. You can do several things to improve your circulation, and using a massage gun may be one of them.

Massage guns apply a combination of percussion and vibration. Two small studies found that whole-body vibration therapy can raise blood flow. More studies are needed to see if local vibration from a massage gun can deliver comparable benefits to whole-body vibration therapy.

But experts –– including athletic trainers and physical therapists –– believe massage guns can help boost blood flow, lessen muscle pain, and support post-workout recovery.

Occasional muscle pain or soreness after a workout is normal. This delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is particularly common among people who exercise for the first time after a long break. But it can happen to anyone, even professional athletes.

According to one review, massage guns can help. The review looked at 39 studies and found that using a massage gun right after a workout could lessen DOMS.

Professional massage therapy can encourage muscle recovery, and so can a massage gun. A study found that massage and vibration therapy are equally effective in limiting post-workout muscle soreness. The researchers found that both methods may also aid recovery after a workout.

Research shows that professional massage therapy may limit pain and thickness in burn scars. Percussive therapy might also help with scar tissue because it uses some of the same mechanics as massage therapy. But there is a need for more research to support this claim.
